Avoid
being dumb tourist
1. Avoid bringing a car into
the center
Not only is parking difficult and
expensive, the clampers enjoy their work, and seem to take particular
pride in attending to foreign cars.Ifclamped,
a yellow sticker on the window will tell you where to pay the
Dfl. 121 fine. For an extra Dfl. 29, a courier will go for you
(Tel: 620 3750).Getting towed (illegal
parking and failure to pay fine in 24 hours) will set you back
another Dfl. 300. Take passport, license and credit cards to:
Cruquiuskade (Crew-key-ous kader) 25. Trams run everywhere,
but ...
2. Avoid tram
riding without a ticket
A strip of tickets, orstrippenkaart,
that youself-stamp on board can be
bought in advance from newsagents, train stations, post-offices
and other outlets. Single tickets from the driver or conductor
at the back as you get on will cost you more. Getting caught
by the (admittedly infrequent) spot checks will set you back
Dfl 100.
3. Avoid wandering along bike
lanes
Or worse, standing around in bike lanes looking at maps, view,
each other, etc.It drives locals
mad. These are expressways
through a city in which thebike is king.
The lanes are usually clearly marked with a bike symbol under
your seat. When you hear a last-minute 'ting' and some lunatic
skims off your shoulder at high speed, cursing, you'll remember
we told you.
4. Avoidthe
following streets
After dark: the alleyways of Nieuwendijk
- a mugger's delight, and pretty foul; the Southern end ofZeedijjk
and the streets off it. Sleazy and riddled with miserable-looking
junkies;Damrak - the worst, tackiest,
neon-infested tourist excess in the country.
